Although set in the 1930s, this beloved mainstay of the British stage (and personal favorite of author J.K. Rowling) is reminiscent of Pride and Prejudice, a captivating romantic comedy and a coming-of-age classic that is replete with sparkling wit. When the Cottons, wealthy Americans with two unmarried sons, move to the British countryside and become neighbors to the poor but remarkable Mortmain family, romance blossoms and culture clashes ensue. Student audiences will delight in this play, chock full of colorful Bohemian characters, wit, wisdom, a fabulous crumbling castle, and a strong dose of love. Themes for classroom discussion include love and courtship; wealth, class and status; and the value of the arts.
